List of Roman bridges
The list of Roman bridges contains bridge constructions from Roman antiquity . The Romans were the first major bridge builders in the world.
For the purposes of this list, a Roman bridge is any structure that has at least one of the following characteristics of Roman architecture :
- Roman arches
- Roman pillars
- Roman foundations
- Roman abutment
- Roman road surface
- Roman breakwater
Also listed are bridges in which Roman building material ( spolia ) was reused as long as they were built on the site of a previous Roman building. Also listed are those Roman bridges that have completely disappeared and whose existence is only proven by the discovery of inscription stones.
Notes on classification
Since bridges are particularly subject to wear and tear, war damage and natural weather conditions, they are far more difficult to classify than other structures. The constant need for repairs and touch-ups has resulted in the appearance of many bridges being changed so much over the centuries that it is very difficult to determine their exact origin and age. The majority of the Roman bridges listed are likely to have been the subject of such structural changes in the Middle Ages or in the (early) modern era.
The bridges are classified below according to their construction material or their function. Unless otherwise indicated, all information comes from O'Connor's novel Bridges , which lists 330 stone bridges, 34 wooden bridges and 54 aqueduct bridges . The Italian bridge researcher Galliazzo has compiled an even more extensive corpus, whose Catalogo generale comprises a total of over 900 Roman bridges, but which has so far only been used here to a limited extent.
Masonry bridges
Roman masonry bridges were mostly made of natural stone or brick . In most cases it was built as an arch bridge. Since an absolute statement about height and range is often not possible, a relative classification is made in these cases (S = small / small, M = middle / medium, L = large / large).

Wooden and stone pier bridges
With wooden bridges, all bridge parts are made of wood . Stone pillar bridges are those structures in which a wooden superstructure rests on stone pillars. In the construction of Roman bridges, stone was often used only as a facing and the pillar core was made of Roman concrete . In the following, all three bridge types are listed in the same category, as the Romans often replaced the originally pure wooden structures with river overpasses with solid pillars in the course of expanding their rule in the provinces .

Pontoon bridges
As an alternative to setting up a ferry service, the Roman army often used pontoon bridges when crossing rivers , in addition to pile yoke bridges . These usually consisted of boats lashed together with their bows pointing against the current. Permanent ship bridges were also built for civil traffic.
