The Pont de Pierre ( Italian Ponte di pietra ; German stone bridge ) is a Roman segment arch bridge in the city of Aosta in the north Italian Aosta Valley . In Roman times , the bridge led on the eastern arterial road from the Augusta Praetoria colony over the Buthier . In later times this mountain stream shifted its bed several hundred meters to the west, so that the ancient structure no longer crosses water today.

The single-arched construction has a span of 17.1 m and a width of 5.9 m. The bridge vault , which consists of large wedge blocks, has a width-height ratio of 3 to 1, which is quite flat for a Roman bridge structure. The outer cladding was built with pudding stone and the arched gussets were filled with high quality Roman concrete .

The construction of the building will take place in the second half of the reign of Emperor Augustus , i.e. between about 27 BC. And 14 AD, who founded the Augusta Praetoria military colony in 24 BC. BC as an important road junction and then expanded. The Pont de Pierre was probably of particular strategic importance in the Roman transport network , since in Aosta the transalpine connection to Gaul branched off into the pass paths of the Great and Little St. Bernard . In the opposite direction to the Po Valley , the road at the valley exit led over another segmented arch bridge, the Pont Saint-Martin , which is still in good condition today .
