The Eşen Çayı (formerly also Kocaçay or Koca Çayı ) is a river in the southern Turkish provinces of Antalya , Burdur and Muğla . The Eşen Çayı was called Xanthos (Latinized Xanthus ) in ancient times .
The Eşen Çayı rises on the western slope of the 2598 m high Kızılca Dağ mountain in the western Taurus . In the upper reaches the river is called Seki Çayı . It initially flows north to the village of Küçüklü . He then turns to the southwest and passes the towns of Bekçiler and Seki . The Eşen-1 dam dams the river. A pressure line leads to the downstream hydropower plant. At another shut-off structure, most of the water is fed back to a hydropower plant near Ören via a pressure pipe . From the confluence of the Akçay on the right, the river bears the name Eşen Çayı . The Eşen Çayı flows south. The Karaçay , a left tributary that flows through the Saklıkent Gorge , meets the river near the village of Eşen . After another 25 km, the Eşen Çayı finally reaches the Mediterranean north of Gelemiş . On the river bank not far from the estuary is the ancient city of Xanthos . The Eşen Çayı has a total length of about 120 km. The catchment area covers 1200 km². The river is a popular destination for canoe tours.
