The Simav Çayı (also Susurluk Çayı , Çapraz Çayı ) is a tributary of the Marmara Sea in northwestern Turkey . In ancient times the river was called Makestos (Latinized Macestus ) and was considered a tributary of the Rhyndakos . Today the Rhyndakos flows as Adırnas Çayı into the lower reaches of the Simav Çayı.

The river has its source in the Simav plain northwest of the district town of Simav in the province of Kütahya . It initially flows in a north-westerly direction into the Balıkesir Province . The Simav Çayı separates the Eğrigöz Dağı mountain ranges in the north from the Simav Dağları in the south. It is dammed three kilometers east of Sındırgı by the Çaygören dam . Then he turns north. It flows west past the city of Bigadiç . Later he passes the cities of Kepsut and Susurluk . In the middle reaches the river is also called Susurluk Çayı . The Simav Çayı reaches the province of Bursa . It passes the city of Karacabey and then takes the Adırnaz Çayı from the right and a few kilometers later the Nilüfer Çayı , also from the right. In the lower reaches the river Çapraz Çayı is called . As such, it finally flows into the Sea of Marmara. The Simav Çayı has a length of 321 km. Its catchment area covers 22,400 km².

The Makestos Bridge spanned the river south of Susurluk during Roman times .
