Sbeitla is a Tunisian city ​​with around 20,253 inhabitants and the capital of the delegation of the same name with around 69,539 inhabitants in the Kasserine governorate . In the immediate vicinity of today's city are the excavations of the Roman city of Sufetula .

location

Sbeitla lies at an altitude of about 520 to 540 m above sea level. d. M. at the water-bearing Oued Sbeitla only a few weeks of the year . The distance to Tunis is about 250 km (driving distance) in a north-easterly direction; the town of Kasserine is around 33 km to the west.

economy

Much of the delegation's territory is used for agriculture (mainly olives and almonds). In the past, the Douleb oil field was exploited by ETAP . Since the 1980s, cultural tourism has played a certain role in the city's economic life.

history

A few traces have already been found from the Punic-Carthaginian period. There was probably a Berber settlement in the area before the city was founded by the Romans in the second half of the 1st century , but it gradually disappeared. In late antiquity , the city experienced a decline. The Byzantines opposed the Muslim-Arab expansion and built several smaller churches and chapels; one contained a baptismal font decorated with mosaics .

Attractions

Apart from the Roman city of Sufetula , the Byzantine baptismal font and an old road bridge over the rocky river bed of the Oued Sbeitla , the city has no historically or culturally significant sights.
