Finike (in ancient Greek Φοινιξ, Φοινικος, Phoinix, Phoinikos ) is a city in the Turkish province of Antalya . It is the capital of the district of the same name and is 110 km southwest of Antalya and 14 km west of the neighboring town of Kumluca at the western end of the Bay of Finike (Finike Körfezi) . The city has a port and a large marina.
history
Finike was born in the 5th century BC. Founded by the Phoenicians under the name Phoinikos as a trading town to supply the nearby town of Limyra with agricultural goods. In 655 AD the naval battle took place in front of the city , in which the Eastern Roman or Byzantine fleet was defeated by the attacking Arabs.
economy
The city lives to a large extent from tourism. Along the 20 km long beach, which extends beyond Mavikent near Kumluca, there are numerous hotels and motels on the main road from Kumluca to Finike, mainly in Hasyurt. You are separated from the beach by the D 400. In Finike there is market day in the city center on Saturdays.
Culture and sights
Every year from the first to the third of July there is a summer festival known beyond the city limits, at which craftsmen present their works.
A park in the middle of the city, houses painted white on the mountainside and the bays to the west are some of the sights. There is lively construction activity up into the mountains.
In the vicinity of Finike, on the D 400 in the direction of Kaş , you will find the İncirli Mağarası (İncirli Cave) . The ancient cities of Limyra and Arykanda are also not far away. The Lycian long-distance hiking trail leads through Finike.
traffic
The D 400 road runs through Finike. This road is four lanes in the direction of Kumluca. The previously very narrow two-lane carriageway towards Demre has been widened.
From Finike via Kumluca - Kemer to Antalya there are numerous minibuses in regular service. During the day there is a bus every hour from Antalya to Demre - Kaş and every hour to Fethiye until 16:30.
