The Ponte do Seda is a Roman bridge near Vila Formosa in Portugal , around three kilometers north of Seda and 40 kilometers west of Portalegre , which spans the Rio Seda over a length of 116 meters . It is one of the best preserved Roman bridges on the Iberian Peninsula .

The ancient bridge was part of a 230-kilometer Roman road that connected Emerita Augusta (now Mérida) in Spain with Olisipo (now Lisbon) in Portugal .

The bridge consists of large-sized, embossed granite blocks . There are stream breakers on the mountain side of the five river piers. In the upper area of the pillars, there are window-like openings rounded at the top with small arches, as the Roman bridge Ponte Romana Alcanede once showed. These flood openings clearly structuring the facade give a clue for the dating of the bridge at the turn of the times. The six arches start just above the waterline. The drainage of the day water from the four meter wide roadway is carried out differently. On the mountain side, it is diverted via gargoyles . On the valley side, there are drainage holes in the parapet wall that drain into a channel that appears as a broad cornice when viewed from the bridge . This means that the roadway was originally curved.
