history

Due to its location on the road between Hobart and Launceston , Pontville emerged as an important resting place as early as the 1820s. In the first half of the 19th century, a military base was also built. In 1832 the first post office was opened, still under the name Brighton , and in 1895 it was renamed Pontville . From 1891 to 1947 there was a rail link to Hobart.

The barracks are closed today and for a while it was used as a refugee camp for asylum seekers in the form of the Pontville Immigration Detention Center . The site is now owned by a farmer.
