The Porpoise subglacial highlands comprise a group of high plateaus that are completely covered by continental glacial ice . The highlands are located west of the Astrolabe subglacial basin in the eastern part of the East Antarctic Wilkesland .
Its extent was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. It is named after the Porpoise , one of the ships of the polar explorer Charles Wilkes in the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842).
