The Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) is a British research facility , which is a department of the Faculty of Geography of the University of Cambridge research into the polar regions of the Earth is dedicated and the Natural Environment Research Council is a member. The institute, which has around 60 permanent employees, was founded in 1920 in memory of the polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott . The first director was the Australian geologist, geographer and polar explorer Frank Debenham until 1946 . The SPRI houses the world's most comprehensive library archive with original documents and manuscripts on the history of polar research . In addition, the institute operates a museum with numerous artefacts , image documents and other exhibits, particularly from the Golden Age of Antarctic research . It also houses the Secretariat of the International Glaciological Society (IGS) and the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research .
