Port Arthur Canal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Port Arthur Canal (also known as Port Arthur Fresh Water Canal ) is a canal in Jefferson County in the south of the state of Texas in the United States . It connects the city of Beaumont to the west of Sabine Lake , where it branches off from the Lower Neches Valley Authority Canal , with Port Arthur , where it is connected to the Port Arthur Reservoir .

The Port Arthur Canal and Dock Company began construction of the canal in 1895, which opened in 1899. With the oil boom in Texas following the discovery of oil at the Spindletop Oil Field (NRHP-NR 66000818) in 1901, deeper waterways were required to cope with oil transport, so that the lower reaches of the Sabine River and Neches River were canalized.

The Port Arthur Canal is now just one of many canals in this region and is connected to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway .
