The Porta Tiburtina , today Porta San Lorenzo (also Porta Taurina ), is a gate of the Aurelian city wall of the city of Rome . Via Tiburtina , today Via Tiburtina Antica , the road leading to Tibur (today's Tivoli ) ran through the gate . The gate takes its modern name from the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura .

The Porta Tiburtina goes back to a monumental arch made of travertine from Tivoli , with which three water pipes , the Aqua Iulia , Aqua Marcia and Aqua Tepula , crossed the Via Tiburtina. The arch was made 5 BC. Erected under Emperor Augustus . When the construction of the Aurelian Wall began in AD 271, the arch was included in the course of the wall, flanked with two defensive towers and thus became the city gate. When the wall was strengthened under Honorius (401/402 AD), a second archway was placed on the inside in front of the existing one. This addition was Pope Pius IX. Remove again in 1869.

There are several inscriptions on the Porta Tiburtina relating to construction work on the water pipes and the gate.
