Rathkenny's Portal Tomb

The portal Tomb von Rathkenny (locally also known as "Druids Altar") is located in the pastureland east of Rathkenny House north of Rathkenny ( Irish Ráth Cheannaigh ) near Nobber . It is one of only two Portal Tombs in County Meath , Ireland (the other is the more wrecked Portal Tomb of Ervey (Meath) ). In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.

It consists of a large capstone, 3.25 m long, 2.55 m wide and 0.85 m thick, lying diagonally on the ground, which leans against the only upright stone and the only remaining orthostat . The underside of the estimated 20 tons deck stone and the north side of the orthostats are to be picked sheets and bowl ( English cups provided). In his book "The Dolmens of Ireland" ( German  "The Dolmen of Ireland" ) from 1897, William Copeland Borlase reports on the grave and cites George Victor Du Noyers (1803-1869) information about the rock carvings .
