The portal system on Paderborner Straße in Detmold- Berlebeck was entered on October 25, 1990 under the number 359 in the list of architectural monuments in Detmold .

From 1893 Detmold was provided with a sewer network under Mayor Theodor Petri . At the same time, the construction of a central water supply began. To this end, a line was laid to the Berlebeck springs . The water supply was opened on December 11, 1899. Grafregent Ernst handed over the sources to the city of Detmold "for eternity". The supposedly unconstitutional donation of the sources to the city led to the Berlebecker-Quellen-Affair and, together with the Lippe succession dispute, to the resignation of the Prime Minister Karl Gustav Oskar Miesitscheck von Wischkau .

The portal system of the waterworks at the Berlebeck springs was made of ashlar according to plans by the city architect Nülle. The lintel above the iron gate bears the inscription Wasserwerk Detmold 1899 . Above it rises a blind arcade with a bronze portrait of the regent Ernst zur Lippe-Biesterfeld, which was designed by Joseph Echteler .
