Portishead Radio ( callsign GKA) was a coastal radio station at Highbridge , Somerset in western Great Britain . It existed from 1928 to 2000 and was the most widely used and largest coastal radio station in the world.
In 1974 Portishead Radio employed 154 radio operators who processed over 20 million words (mostly in telegraphy ). On January 31, 1999 at 23:59 UTC, Portishead Radio broadcast the latest weather report and navigation warnings. The station was closed in 2000 and the individual services were outsourced or completely discontinued. The automated Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems , GMDSS, took over many of the station's tasks.
English singer and composer Mike Batt wrote a song on Portishead Radio in 1980.
