The port of Porto de Aratu is a seaport for bulk cargo handling in the state of Bahia in the Bahia de Todos os Santos , opposite the island of Ilha de Maré. Port handling accounts for 60% of all cargo handled in Bahia and is therefore important for the economy of this state. The port is connected to the Aratu industrial center, Centro Industrial de Aratu (CIA), as well as to the Ford factory in Camaçari .

In addition, petrochemical products are handled for the Pólo Petroquímico company in Camaçari . These are liquid cargo, gases and also dry bulk cargo. The port consists of 4 terminals:

  • TPG gas terminal (180 meters quay length)
  • TGL tank terminal (340 meters quay length)
  • 2 × TGS bulk terminals (3 berths with 366 meters quay length)

history

In 1966 the industrial center of Aratu was completed and on December 17, 1968, the federal government approved the company Usina Siderúrgica da Bahia SA (Usiba) to build a private terminal on the Ponta da Sapoca in the Bahia de Todos os Santos bay . Also three years later, on October 1st, 1971, the Brazilian Ministry of Transport approved the project for the construction of the port of Porto de Aratu . After completion, the port was inaugurated on February 26, 1975. The motor ship MS Guanabara was the first ship handling in the new port. The Companhia das Docas do Estado da Bahia (Codeba) took over the management of the port.

Two land accesses to the port were built. The road connection via the federal road BR324 and the rail connection to the network of Ferrovia Centro Atlântica S / A , Centro-Leste line. Access over the water of the Bahia de Todos os Santos was made via a canal 3.7 km long and 180 m wide.
