The deep-water port of Porto de Suape is a Brazilian seaport in the state of Pernambuco and is located between the municipalities of Ipojuca and Cabo de Santo Agostinho at the mouth of the Rio Ipojuca into the Atlantic , 40 km south of the city of Recife .

history

The port and industrial complex was planned under the Pernambucan governor José Francisco de Moura Cavalcanti in the area of Praia de Suape from 1973 to 1975 and built from 1978. Originally the port in Suape was supposed to replace the port of Recife . For this purpose, a state law was passed on November 7, 1978, which provided for the construction of Suape as "Complexo Industrial Portuário".

A particular focus of the port of Suape is the handling of containers. In 1995, the Suape container terminal started operations. From the year 2000 in particular, enormous growth rates were achieved in the handling of containers (in the year 62,000 container units TEU and in 2006 already 132,000 TEU). The operation of the container terminal was privatized during this time and today the Philippine port handling company ICTSI carries out the operations.

In 2014, the planning and construction of three chemical plants at Petroquímica Suape was completed and the construction of these plants and an oil refinery advanced.

structure

Today the port is one of the largest sea ports in the region and has established itself as a freight center for goods to be transported to or from the states of Pernambuco , Alagoas and Paraíba . The port has a road connection to the state road PE-060 , which later runs along the coast directly to the state of Alagoas and Recife.

In addition, goods are also produced in the adjacent industrial center that are intended directly for export by sea. The Estaleiro Atlântico Sul shipyard builds ships on the site of the port.

tourism

Due to the large construction and assembly work in the port complex, there has been an enormous influx of workers over the past four decades, which has a negative impact on the overall development of tourism in the communities and on the beaches on the Atlantic coast due to the number alone.

With the expansion of the port, an approx. 10 km long breakwater was built in front of the original coastline. The resulting changes in flow conditions in the estuaries of the Rio Ipojuca and Merepe are named as one of the reasons for the shark attacks off Recife that began in 1992 .
