The wastewater treatment plant Dusseldorf-Nord (sometimes treatment plant Ilverich is called) is a mechanical-biological waste water - sewage treatment plant on the left bank of the Rhine north of Dusseldorf . The approximately 13 hectare area is located in the Meerbusch- Ilverich district , directly at the airport bridge on the A 44 . The areas directly adjacent to the company premises are predominantly in the Die Issel landscape protection area , while the areas to the east are in the Ilvericher Altrheinschlinge nature reserve .

The sewage treatment plant was built in 1966 to meet the requirements of the water supervisory authority and the state water law for contemporary wastewater treatment. At that time, before the founding of the city of Meerbusch , the site was given to Düsseldorf by Ilverich. Since its construction, the system has been modernized and expanded several times to adapt to increased requirements.

The system is operated by the city drainage company in Düsseldorf or by the canal and hydraulic engineering department of the state capital Düsseldorf. It disposes of around 100,000 m³ of rainwater, private and commercial wastewater every day. The catchment area encompasses the north of Düsseldorf (from around a line Altstadt - Gerresheim ; south of this the wastewater goes to the second Düsseldorf sewage treatment plant, the southern sewage treatment plant in Hamm ), most of Meerbusch and small parts of Erkrath , Kaarst and Neuss , a total of approximately accordingly 600,000 people. From the districts on the right bank of the Rhine in the north of Düsseldorf, the wastewater from Lohausen is pumped through an almost 1 km long culvert under the Rhine.

The sewage treatment plant works according to the activated sludge process and - as with this type usual - roughly from: rakes , sand traps , primary sedimentation tank , aeration tank and secondary clarifier . The sewage sludge produced is broken down in digestion towers . The digested sludge is partly used for recultivation , partly after drying externally, in a coal drying plant in Herten , thermally utilized. The digester gases are burned directly in the sewage treatment plant in a combined heat and power plant and thus help to cover the plant's energy needs.

The treated wastewater is discharged into the Rhine.

Trivia

The sewage treatment plant served as the backdrop for the shooting of an episode of the crime series Tatort with Götz George as Inspector Schimanski .
