Image description

The painting, made in oil on canvas, has a size of 105 × 85 centimeters. It shows the standing Charlotte Corinth in a frontal view in a brown blouse and a dark skirt. She looks directly at the viewer with her head slightly tilted. The dark hair is partly tied up and held in place by purple bows. The brown blouse has a wide round neckline, which is kept in black and the neck is bordered with black lace. On the right side (on the left of the viewer) a black button strip extends to the lower third of the blouse and there are also black borders and a black tip just below the elbow on the sleeves. The blouse and skirt taper around the woman's waist . The skirt is solid black or dark brown and falls smoothly over the legs, where the portrait ends above the knees. Charlotte also wears a long and thin gold chain around her neck and a brooch with a green gem at the neckline. The right arm is placed on the hip and adorned on the wrist by a thin gold bracelet, on the ring finger she also wears a gold ring. She also wears a golden bangle on her left wrist, which is, however, much wider and more ornamented than that of the right arm. Her left arm is hanging down, in her hand she is holding a dark thread between index finger and thumb and here too she wears a ring on her ring finger.

In the background there is a table with a blue and white cover, behind it a dark door in a light frame. Charlotte Berend-Corinth herself described the picture in the catalog raisonné as follows: “Charlotte Corinth in a brown silk blouse with black lace and a dark skirt; on the left arm, supported on the table, a broad gold bracelet. In the background a dark green door. ”The picture is signed and dated in two lines in black on the right edge in the upper third of the picture:“ Lovis Corinth 1910 ”.

The following description is given in the auction description: “The portrait receives a special aesthetic charm from the cold-warm contrasts of the color scheme. The bright blue fabric that is visible behind the figure stands in striking contrast to the warm gold tones of the blouse and jewelry. The light, rosy flesh is particularly emphasized by this contrast and underlines the youthful freshness that emanates from the portrayed. "

No information is available about the specific background behind the creation of the image. According to Charlotte Berend-Corinth, the picture was painted on Klopstockstrasse in Berlin, where the Corinth family lived. Lovis Corinth and Charlotte Berend married in 1903, and since 1902 Corinth has been painting his former pupil regularly in different scenes, both in nudes and in different situations. Their son Thomas was born in 1904, and their daughter Wilhelmine followed in 1909 . At the time the picture was taken, Charlotte was 30 years old and a mother of two. This is emphasized in the auction description: “In the year our portrait was created, Charlotte, who is now thirty, is already the mother of two children. Despite her elegant clothes and rich gold jewelry, she presents herself unpretentious and girlish. The lively, amused facial expressions, the slightly tilted head and the hand resting loosely on the hip convey the immediacy and ease with which the portrayed face the viewer. The open, loving intimacy that connects the painter and his favorite model can also be felt here. "
