The portrait of Mr. Lilienthal is a painting by the German painter Lovis Corinth . The picture shows Franz Lilienthal, a childhood friend of Corinth's, in profile and was painted in 1889. It was last sold in 2018 and is privately owned.

Image description

After the works of Charlotte Berend-Corinth is located at the image to an elbow of a seated man. The body and head are shown in profile, the background is reddish to pink. The man, Franz Lilienthal, is dressed in a dark suit, from which the light-colored collar and the light-colored cuffs on the sleeves peek out, and is sitting on an armchair that is also dark. His hands are on his knees and he is holding a cigar between the index and middle fingers of his left hand .

The portrayed person directs his eyes straight ahead without looking at the viewer. He has a mustache sticking out at the tips and short sideburns, and his hair is kept short.

According to Charlotte Berend-Corinth, the picture was painted in Königsberg ; the portrayed Franz Lilienthal was a friend of Corinth's. In his autobiographical story "From my life", which appeared in the collection " Legenden aus dem Künstlerleben ", Corinth referred to him as "Blumenthal" and described him as "East Prussia, whose long thinness from behind was strikingly similar to an ostrich."

Exhibitions and provenance

The picture was exhibited in 1926 in the exhibition "Lovis Corinth - Exhibition of Paintings and Watercolors in His Memory" in the National Gallery in Berlin . It was in the possession of Alfred Odenheimer in Emmendingen , Baden-Württemberg, together with a letter from Charlotte Berend-Corinth of Santa Barbara , California to Mr. Alfred Odenheimer on March 6, 1943. It was then passed on privately in southern Germany, whereby the The whereabouts according to the catalog raisonné were unknown.

On October 21, 2009 the picture was auctioned at Bonhams in New York City for US $ 21,960, on October 29, 2010 it was sold by auction house Ketterer Kunst for a result of 29,280 euros (US $ 42,748) and on November 9, 2018 by Karl & Faber art auctions .
