Digital portrait index
The digital portrait index of printed portraits of the early modern period is a web portal that allows location-independent and free online access to graphic portraits of the early modern period from important collections in the German-speaking area. The project started in 2009. On June 23, 2011 the portal officially went online.

The aim of the portal is the systematic indexing and online publication of over 275,000 print portraits from twelve important public collections and libraries . For cultural studies , the digital portrait index offers a modern instrument for researching one of the most important art genres of the early modern period, taking into account far-reaching art and social science issues. The portrait index offers free access to descriptions and digital images of early modern portraits from several academic libraries and museums in Germany and Austria under a uniform user interface . The portal currently makes data sets and digital images available for around 285,000 portraits (as of May 2020). Inventory overviews, sorted according to collections and their locations, offer orientation about the portrait holdings in Germany, but also the connected national library in Austria. Modern data technologies, combined with standardized documentation, allow a structured search, for example for artists or for persons depicted and their nobility or professions. The graphic sheets are presented in high-resolution scans.

The portal is supported by the Photo Archive Photo Marburg in cooperation with the Berlin State Library , the Veste Coburg art collections , the German National Library Frankfurt am Main (DNB), the Gleimhaus Halberstadt, the Leipzig University Library , the State Collection of Graphics in Munich , the LWL Museum for art and culture - Westfälisches Landesmuseum Münster, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg (GNM), the Austrian National Library Vienna (ÖNB) and the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel (HAB). The German Museum of Books and Writing of the DNB in Leipzig, the University and City Library of Cologne and the University Library of Heidelberg are associated partners. The development and expansion of the portrait index are supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
