Postcode (Portugal)
The Portuguese postcodes ( Portuguese : Código Postal ) consist of 8 characters, four digits followed by a hyphen and another 3 digits. The last three digits (introduced in 1994) usually stand for districts, blocks of houses, streets or the like, also for smaller towns that share a distribution center.
The first four digits indicate the distribution center. In the case of larger cities, this can also be just one district. 1 to 9 are used as the first digit. 1 stands for the Lisbon region, 9 for the Azores and Madeira, the others indicate larger regions. The sequence of digits moves on the coast to the north, then to the east and from there to the south. The 2000 stands for parts of Santarém, 3000 for parts of Coimbra , 4000 for parts of Porto , 5000 for Vila Real , 6000 for Castelo Branco , 7000 for Évora, 8000 for Faro .
