The Post Sports Club Ludwigshafen (short: Post SV Ludwigshafen ) is the second largest sports club in Ludwigshafen am Rhein with 17 sports departments and almost 1500 members . The badminton department can show particular success with its participation in the first Bundesliga and several national players. The club belonged to the Badminton Bundesliga from the 2002/03 season and voluntarily withdrew from it at the end of the 2005/06 season (see also: 2004/05 season ).

Club history

The association was founded in 1927 as an association for physical exercises for postal workers with departments for football, fistball, athletics, gymnastics, bowling and chess. After the sports facilities were destroyed by a bombing raid in 1944, the club, like all government sports clubs, was banned by Directive No. 23 of the Allied Control Council in 1946 . In 1951 the club was founded again as a post sports club with the additional departments of hiking, handball and gymnastics. A year later, she was accepted into the Palatinate Sports Association and the Southwest German Football Association .

In 1957 the tennis, table tennis and badminton departments were added, and in 1959 a shooting department. In the following year, the establishment of its own sports hall began and the association created a post band. In 1970 the basketball department was added, which was followed a year later by the first women's football team. In 1976, a women's team was also added to the bowling department.

In 1990 the association hosted the badminton federal postal championships.

Membership development

After being re-established in 1951, the association had 630 members in 1955. In 1965 the thousand mark was passed with a membership of 1,094. After a slight decrease until 1975, the number of members grew continuously. In 1988 it rose for the first time to 2,000 and in 1995 it peaked at 2,289. Today there are around 1,500 members.

The badminton department of the club achieved particular success. After the team had received the honorary award from the Saarland Minister of Culture in 1964 for the best team performance at the major tournament in Saarbrücken, the department provided all champions of the Palatinate Badminton Association in 1973 .

In 1989 the first team rose to the 2nd Bundesliga . In 1996, Jens Roch was the first club player to be appointed to the national team, who then took part in the 1999 World Cup. In 2001 the badminton team reached second place in the 2nd Bundesliga. In 2001 Heike Frank and Stefan Frey, who had previously been runner-up in doubles in 1979, won the German championship title.

In 2002 Jens Roch became German runner-up in singles and player Anika Sietz was runner-up in doubles. In the same year the first team became champions in the 2nd Bundesliga South. In the following four seasons, the team started in the 1st Badminton Bundesliga, before the team was withdrawn from the top German division in 2006. With Roch and Neli Boteva , the club has two national players. Boteva also took part in the Olympic Games four times. The multiple German champion Katja Michalowsky played for PSV from 2003 to 2006.

In addition to the successes in the adult sector, players and teams of the club achieved top places in national and international competitions in the youth division.

Men's

The first men's team achieved three championships in a row in the years 2008-2010 and thus promotion from the 2nd regional league (Rhineland-Palatinate) to the 2nd Bundesliga - at the same time, the second team was also able to win three championships in a row from the district league move up to the 1st regional league. In 2011 both teams missed relegation and relegated to the 3rd Bundesliga (North) and 2nd regional league.

Ladies

By forming a syndicate with SKC Mundenheim, the first team played in the 2nd Bundesliga (North) since 2007. The dissolution of the sports community resulted in forced relegation to the 1st regional league (Rhineland-Palatinate). In 2011 they were promoted to the 3rd Bundesliga (North) - the second team was promoted to the 2nd regional league at the same time.

Other successes

The bowling department provided the German postmasters in 2003 and 2006, initially with both teams, and in 2006 only with the women.

Other departments

The women in the tennis department made it to the south-west league in 1958 and became champions in 1965.

The basketball department rose to the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar in 1995, and in 1982 the table tennis ladies made it to the Rhineland-Palatinate League.
