Pot margin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Potmarge is a narrow river in the Frisian municipality Leeuwarden in the Netherlands . Until 1944, the river formed the border between the city of Leeuwarden and the neighboring rural community of Leeuwarderadeel . It extends from the river Greuns in the south to the city canal Zuidergrachtswal in the old town of Leeuwarden, which developed on the banks of the rivers Potmarge, Vliet and Ee .

The name Potmarge is first recorded in the 17th century and is most likely derived from the elements Pot (puddle, moat) and a word related to the sea with the meaning of water or body of water .

In 1858 the Potmarge was dredged on behalf of the Leeuwarden municipal council . In the 1860s the Potmar bridges were improved and the northernmost part of the river was provided with quay walls. Although the river was of great importance as a waterway, hardly any new settlements were built on the southern banks of the Potmarge. As a result, the Potmarge forms a green zone in the otherwise densely populated city of Leeuwarden even in the 21st century. After the opening of the New Canal ( Dutch : Nieuwe Kanaal ) in 1895, the Potmarge lost its importance as a connecting route. At the end of the 20th century, it was largely unsuitable for water traffic due to its narrow width and depth. During the year 2000, however, it was dredged and made navigable again.
