Poul Bjørndahl Astrup (born August 4, 1915 in Copenhagen , † November 30, 2000 ) was a Danish physiologist and laboratory chemist.

The Danish polio epidemic 1952–53 affected many young people, many of whom became dependent on ventilation because of paralysis of the respiratory muscles. As head of the laboratory at Blegdamshospitalet in Copenhagen, Astrup was committed to providing the best possible treatment for these patients. He found that the key to effectively controlling ventilation was measuring acid-base status and oxygenation, and together with Radiometer A / S, he developed a device for blood gas analysis .

From 1954 to 1979 Astrup was head of the central laboratory at Rigshospitalet (University Hospital of Copenhagen). In 1964 Astrup was appointed professor for clinical chemistry.
