Powell Duffryn

Powell Duffryn was a British coal mining and industrial group. The successor company PD Ports operates several ports in northern England ( Teesport , Hartlepool , Howden and Keadby ).

history

In 1810 Thomas Powell (1779? –1863) founded his first colliery in South Wales. With the abolition of a law in 1834 that restricted coal exports, the northern English market opened up for him. In the following time he built his own inland shipping fleet and took part in the Taff Vale Railway . In the late 1840s, Powell was the largest coal miner in the world. In 1860 he merged his mines with those of George Elliot .

In 1935 Powell Duffryn took over the Welsh Associated Collieries and renamed himself PD Associated Collieries. The annual production grew to 20 million tons. The Coal Industry Nationalization Act expropriated the coal business on January 1, 1947 and the company had to concentrate on its ancillary businesses. The subsidiaries in 1999 included Air Compressor Products Inc. (USA); Belliss & Morcom Ltd. (UK); Eagle Compressors Inc. (USA); Geesink BV (Netherlands); Hamworthy Combustion Engineering Ltd. (UK); Hamworthy Heating Ltd. (UK); Hamworthy Compressor Group (UK); Hamworthy Canada Ltd .; Hamworthy Compressor Systems Ltd. (UK); Hamworthy Marine Ltd. (UK); Hamworthy Marine Technology Ltd. (UK); Hamworthy Pumps and Compressors Ltd. (UK); Humberside Holdings Ltd. (UK); H & L Garages Ltd. (UK); Humberside Sea & Land Services Ltd. (UK); JIP Ball Valve (Denmark); Peabody Engineering Corporation (USA); Powell Duffryn Shipping Ltd. (UK); Powell Duffryn Storage Ltd. (UK); Svanehoj International A / S (Denmark) and Tees and Hartlepool Port Authority Ltd. (UK).

In 2000 the company was acquired by the Japanese Nikko Principal Investments Japan Ltd. accepted. After that, several parts of the business such as B. Hamworthy, Belliss & Morcom sold to Gardner Denver . In 2005 the company went to Babcock & Brown . In 2009 the port business (PD Ports) was sold to Brookfield Asset Management .
