history

Howden Minster

Howden was first mentioned when King Edgar transferred the Howden estate to his wife in 959, which first brought the place into contact with the court.

1080 William I handed over the estate including the church to the Bishop of Durham , who in turn transferred the church, later Howden Minster , to the monks of Durham; he kept the estate to himself. Construction of Howden Minster began in 1228 and was completed in the 15th century.

In 1548 the churches and monasteries were dissolved under King Henry VIII, together with Howden Minster. In the period that followed, the church building gradually fell into disrepair. During the English Civil War it was occupied by parliamentary troops and additionally damaged. On September 29, 1696, the roof of the nave finally collapsed. In 1748 the ruins were finally removed and the area leveled. The wall material was used elsewhere by the villagers.

In the early 19th century, Howden became internationally known for its annual horse fair in September. In 1807 it is said to have been the largest horse market in the United Kingdom. Up to 4,000 horses were sold every day.

City center

Howden's cityscape was largely shaped by Georgian and Victorian architecture . It is said that Howden had the highest density of pubs in the country at the time.

In 1840 a railway accident occurred not far from the city , in which four passengers were killed.

In 1850 the Catholic Sacred Heart Church opened in Howden.

In 1915 an airship hangar was built near Howden to protect British ships and ports along the coast from German submarine attacks during the First World War .

Before and during the Second World War , the writer Nevil Shute took part in the development of the R100 in Howden together with Barnes Neville Wallis , the inventor of the roll bomb . Today, Shute's house has a blue plaque .

In 1932 the Catholic minister underwent a major renovation.
