Political career

Köhler became a member of the CDU in the GDR in 1972. From 1979 to 1989 he represented his party in the Hainspitz local council. Out of indignation over the nominees of his CDU district association for the People's Chamber election in 1990, Köhler let himself stand up. He ran in electoral district 06 (Gera district) on list position 8. Since the CDU was able to win 9 seats, Köhler became a member of the People's Chamber. Later he was one of the 144 members of the Volkskammer who entered the Bundestag on October 3, 1990. Köhler also ran again for the federal elections on December 2, 1990. He won constituency 303 and moved back into the Bundestag. He was able to repeat this success again in 1994. In both electoral terms he was a full member of the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Forestry, and in the 12th electoral term also in the 2nd Committee of Inquiry (Treuhandanstalt, since October 1993). In the 12th electoral term he was a deputy member of the Finance Committee and in the 13th term of the Defense Committee. In 1998 Köhler only got 28.1% of the first votes in his constituency and lost his mandate to the SPD member Karsten Schönfeld , who got 33.7% of the first votes. From 1992 Köhler was also state chairman of the SME Association of Thuringia and a member of the federal board of the CDU / CSU SME Association.
