Powell Rock

The Powell rock is a small and washed up from the sea Rifffelsen before the east side of Signy Iceland in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located 500 m northeast of Balin Point before the entrance to Starfish Cove .

The Norwegian captain Petter Sørlle named him Powellboen after his ship, the whaler Powell , with which he had searched for suitable anchorages in the waters around the Southern Orkney Islands between 1911 and 1912. The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey identified the rock in 1947 based on storm waves observed here in heavy seas. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated Sørlle's name into English in 1955.
