Power of 10 is a quiz show that first aired on CBS . The first episode ran on August 7, 2007, and the first season of 16 programs was hosted by Drew Carey . The grand prize was US $ 10 million.

The rights for the show were sold in 26 other countries. In Germany it ran on VOX and was moderated by Dirk Bach . The original won the 2008 Rose d'Or in the “Game Show” category.

The concept in the German edition

Candidates can win up to a million euros if they correctly assess the results of surveys . To this end, the Forsa Institute surveys a thousand randomly selected people in Germany. In many cases the questions are about a dilemma and social desirability , e.g. B. "Would you pool with someone who you knew was HIV positive ?"

First, two candidates compete against each other in a duel. You have to assess as precisely as possible how the Germans answered a particular question. Whoever is closer to the correct percentage gets one point. Whoever has three points first wins the duel ( best-of-five ) and qualifies for the game for the million.

The candidate must survive five rounds to win the main prize. The first question is about € 100, then the profit increases tenfold (hence the name of the show). At the same time, there is less scope. For the first question, the candidate can indicate a range of forty percentage points within which the correct value must be. The next questions are thirty, twenty and ten percentage points. For the million question, the result of the previous question must be met exactly within the 10% range. As a counselor, the candidate can bring a relative or friend with them. There is also a “permanent public joker” (Dirk Bach); the studio audience votes for each question and the result is displayed in a bar chart. Moderator Dirk Bach does not know the correct answer before the dissolution and speculates himself. If the answer is wrong, the candidate falls back to the previous winning level and is eliminated. However, he can voluntarily end the game at any time and take the amount earned up to that point with him.

Broadcast in Germany

Power of 10 was broadcast from April 21 to May 13, 2008 on the private broadcaster VOX . The show was moderated by Dirk Bach . In the first week there was an episode every day from Monday to Friday at 10.15 p.m. The program then ran on Tuesdays at 8.15 p.m. After only eight editions of the first season, the show was discontinued due to low ratings .

Broadcast in France

In France the format runs as "Jouer pour 5 fois plus" on TF1 . The name means something like "playing by five times". This is also reflected in the fact that there is a different profit system here than in Germany, namely 1,600, 8,000, 40,000, 200,000 and 1 million euros, i.e. the amount increases fivefold.
