Csorna Premonstratensian Prophecy

The Provosty of Csorna is a branch of the Premonstratensian Order in Csorna ( western Hungary ).

history

The provost's office, according to later tradition the Premonstratensian monastery, in Csorna was founded in 1180. In the 13th century, like other monasteries at this time, the monastery took on the issue of documents for private legal transactions. The oldest surviving deed by the provost dates from 1226.

After the Battle of Mohács (1526) , the Ottoman victors dissolved the monasteries and rehearsals in the conquered area; the provost of Csorna was hit in 1542. Only when the Ottomans left Hungary with the peace treaty of Karlowitz could the Premonstratensian monastery be reopened in 1701. It was closed again during the Josephinian reforms in 1786 and reopened in 1802. Since then, the previous monasteries in Türje and Jánoshida have been incorporated into the Csorna Provostry.

In 1950 the Premonstratensian Monastery in Csorna, which had 64 members at the time, was closed by the Hungarian government. Seven Premonstratensians fled abroad. They formed a novitiate in Orange County (California) in 1961 , which was given ecclesiastical status of an abbey in 1984.

In 1990 the Premonstratensians were able to take over the site again. Today there is also a museum about the history of the town of Csorna and the Premonstratensians.
