President of the Artsakh Republic

The President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic ( Russian: Президент Нагорно-Карабахской Республики ) is the head of state of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Arzach (formerly the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh), which under international law belongs to the national territory of Azerbaijan . After the declaration of independence on September 2, 1991, from January 7, 1992 the chairman of parliament was the head of state. Since December 29, 1994 there has been the office of the President, who among other things appoints the Prime Minister of Nagorno-Karabakh . The head of state is elected for a five-year term and the incumbent is Bako Sahakjan .

Former President Robert Kocharyan , incumbent from 1994 to 1997, was subsequently President of Armenia from 1998 to 2008 .
