The Zurich Christkindlimarkt is run by a private organizer and does not receive any financial support from the city. He is a member of the “Christmas in Zurich” association, which is committed to joint communication on pre-Christmas events in Zurich.

The sister market of the Zurich Christkindlimarkt in the main train station is the Lucerne Christkindlimarkt in the train station .

history

In 1990, the Zurich main station was supplemented by the first S-Bahn lines. By removing various pavilions, the large main hall built by Jakob Friedrich Wanner in 1871 became usable for events. As part of the SBB usage concept for the main hall, the Zurich Christkindlimarkt took place for the first time in 1994. In addition to the large main hall, additional areas of the main station were used for the market in the 2000s, including the Landesmuseum and Bahnhofplatz halls and the plaza in the Shopville below . Depending on the situation, there were frequent adjustments due to construction work in the main train station.

In the first year of the event, the Christkindlimarkt consisted of just under a dozen market stalls, but it reached its record size in 2007 with over 160 stalls. As a result of the construction work on the Altstetten – Zurich HB – Oerlikon cross-city link , the number dropped and leveled off around 140.

particularities

The eye-catcher is the ten meter high Christmas tree in the center of the Christkindlimarkt, which is decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals. It is selected in late summer and comes from local forests. The Christmas tree is a popular photo opportunity for locals and tourists. Also worth mentioning are the annual art and craft demonstrations by Emmental cultural workers. This is accompanied by a visit to Santa Claus and activities that change every year, such as visits from llamas and alpacas as well as organ grinder .
