Presidential election in Azerbaijan 2018

The 2018 presidential election in Azerbaijan took place on April 11th. The presidential election in Azerbaijan was originally scheduled for October 17th, but was brought forward by six months on February 5th, 2018.

After the constitutional referendum on September 26, 2016, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan will be directly elected for a term of seven years.

Election process

The election took place on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, which was declared non-working. 5.3 million people were eligible to vote. The Azerbaijan Central Election Committee said the 2018 presidential election was held in 5,641 polling stations in 125 constituencies. Eight people were registered as presidential candidates. The 2018 presidential election was accompanied by 894 election observers. Observers from the various candidates and their parties were present at the polling stations.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) sent around 280 election observers to the country, who discovered numerous serious irregularities.

According to the opposition, “all previous elections in Azerbaijan have been falsified and held with blatant violations of the right to vote”.

Election result

The election winner was the incumbent President İlham Əliyev with 86.02% of the vote.
