Presidential election in Senegal 2000

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential election in Senegal 2000 took place on February 27 (1st round) and on March 19 ( runoff ) in the West African state of Senegal . The runoff election had become necessary because no candidate was able to win a majority of the votes in the first round. Although the incumbent President Abdou Diouf and candidate of the Parti Socialiste du Sénégal , which has ruled the country since independence in 1960, had a clear lead in the first round, the opposition leader Abdoulaye Wade of the Parti Démocratique Sénégalais won almost 60% in the runoff election of votes, while Diouf almost retained his result of a good 41% from the first round. With this decision, Abdoulaye Wade was elected for the first time in Senegal, a president who did not belong to the former state party Parti Socialiste du Sénégal. The turnout in both rounds was a good 60% of the vote.
