Scientific name

( Temminck , 1830)

The Prachttamazone ( Amazona pretrei ) is a parrot of the subfamily of arini . The basic color of the plumage of this 32 centimeter Amazon species is green. On the head, the forehead, the reins, the crown and the area around the eyes are plumed red. This also applies to the thighs and the swinging hand rugs.

The distribution area of the great amazons is now limited to the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul , located in the southeast of Brazil . In contrast to the typical Amazon parrots, the great amazon is a food specialist that mainly lives on araucaria seeds. Accordingly, magnificent amazons only occur in forests with a high proportion of araucarias and nomadize within their range depending on the fruit ripeness.

The Brazilian government has taken some measures to make the Brazilian population aware of the threat to the African Amazon and the Pigeon-necked Amazon, which can be found in the same habitat . These measures seem to be having an effect, because the population of the great amazon has obviously increased from a low in 1994, when a maximum of 8500 animals was assumed, to 16,000 again in 1997.
