The Praga E-39 (also: BH-39) was a Czechoslovakian biplane - trainer aircraft of the 1930s.

history

The E-39 was designed by Pavel Beneš and Miroslav Hajn. The prototype was equipped with a Walter NZ engine and was therefore given the designation BH-39NZ, with the initial abbreviation for the two builders.

The first flight took place in the summer of 1931. On August 27, 1931, the first prototype arrived at the VZLÚ , where it was subjected to extensive tests that were intended to prepare for series production. According to a specification published shortly before by the Ministry of Defense, the aircraft types were given letter designations by Czechoslovak companies, whereupon the BH-39 was renamed the E-39. After the completion of the test flights, which ran until 1933, the decree č.j.40.553-V / 3 odd. ordered the first 21 series aircraft on December 7, 1933. Eight of these machines were built by Letov and were equipped with the Walter NZ 120, the other 13 were supplied by Praga with the Walter "Gemma", whereby two machines with the serial numbers 19 and 20 received a Walter "Mars" with 155 hp. In 1936 further orders for a total of 85 E-39s were placed. The last series machines left the factory in 1939 and were destined for the so-called "Slovak State".

The names of the machines resulted from the engines used: The E-39G was equipped with Walter “Gemma” and the E-39M with Walter “Mars”. In 1937 the last series of ten E-39AG aircraft followed with the Armstrong Siddeley Genet Major engine .

A total of 139 E-39s were built and delivered, 35 of them to flying clubs.
