The Praga E-114 was a single-engine sport aircraft produced by the Czechoslovak company ČKD-Praga . Because of its light weight, it was also known as the Air Baby .
development
It was designed by Jaroslav Šlechta as a shoulder decker . The prototype first flew in September 1934 and was presented to the public at the Paris Aerosalon that same year .
Series production began in 1935 with a 29 kW Praga B engine (a replica of the Aeronca E.113 engine), and two years later the E-115 appeared , some of which later became a more powerful 44 kW Praga D engine received and had a trunk elongated by 20 cm. Several national records have been set with this type. The second prototype ( OK-PGB , later G-ADXL ) caused a stir with a flight from Lympne (Kent) to Cape Town. He covered the 14,722 km in 16 days and 4.5 hours.
Two E-114s took part in the star flight to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin-Rangsdorf . The pilots Fuksa and Polma achieved the first two places in the ranking of the international star flight. The number of points they achieved was by far higher than that of their competitors. Their route performance was also quite comparable to that of the other competitor aircraft, which were equipped with much more powerful engines.
The British company Hills & Sons acquired the license rights and built the E-114 as the Praga Baby . A version entitled E-117 appeared in 1937, equipped with a Praga D. A copy of this version was equipped with a nose wheel landing gear in 1946, but did not go into series production. A four-seat version was introduced in 1936 under the designation E-214 . She was equipped with a British Pobjoy-R star engine, longer hull and modified landing gear.
After the Second World War , production was resumed as the E-114D (with Praga D ) and E-114M (with Walter Mikron III ), 100 units were manufactured by Praga in 1946 and 26 units by Letov .
