Impact slopes of the Iller north of Kempten
The impact slopes of the Iller north of Kempten are a geotope in the Iller landscape protection area in Kempten (Allgäu) . At an altitude of 660 meters above sea level, these steep impact slopes are located in the natural area of the Illervorberge in the geological spatial unit of the Iller- Lech young moraine region.
The area around the geotope is mainly characterized by moraine landscape forms formed during the Ice Age , while younger, Holocene- era valley floodplains dominate the river level of the Iller . On the eastern bank there are rocks of the Upper Series of the Upper Freshwater Molasse, which were exposed as a result of the erosion by the water.
In the course of its history, the Iller created several impinging slopes up to 25 meters high on this section of the river. In this profile you can see limestones , marls and conglomerates from the Middle to Upper Miocene over a length of 300 meters . The area of the designated geotope is around 3000 m².
The geotope of the rebound slopes of the Iller north of Kempten was classified as locally significant by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (geotope no. 763A003), with a suitability as an excursion and research object and can only be seen from the opposite, western river bank.
