A Pre-flight Safety Instruction Demonstration (also known as a passenger briefing or just a demo in aviation language ) is a description and demonstration of the essential procedures within a commercial aircraft that are intended to ensure the survival of the passenger in an emergency .

In most cases, this demonstration is carried out as a manual demonstration by the flight attendants (e.g. at Lufthansa ), but can also take place as a video (e.g. at Condor ) and, in addition to the location of the emergency exits, includes the handling of the seat belt , the use of oxygen masks , the location of the life jackets and their use. It is a legal requirement to hold a demonstration for passengers before each flight. The safety instruction cards in the seat pockets serve as a supplement to this .

It is generally complained that passengers still pay too little attention to safety instructions. Analyzes of various aircraft accidents such as British Airtours Flight 28M have shown that panicked passengers tend to be oblivious to essential life-saving details such as the location of the emergency exit closest to their seat. A careful observation of the safety instruction demonstration can save lives in an emergency and should also be observed by frequent flyers.

Colloquially, the safety introduction is jokingly referred to as "water ballet".

For German airlines there is a guideline of the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt which contains certain regulations and minimum standards regarding the safety instruction demonstration in video form.
