Predrag Vranicki

Predrag Vranicki (born January 21, 1922 in Benkovac , Croatia , † January 31, 2002 ) was a Yugoslav university professor, philosopher and author. The author came from the practice group and is therefore to be regarded as a representative of a specifically Yugoslav Marxism that is independent from Soviet orthodoxy.

Life

Vranicki studied philosophy in Zagreb and received his doctorate from the University of Belgrade . During the Second World War he fought on the side of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army . From 1947 he was assistant, from 1952 lecturer, from 1956 professor of philosophy at the University of Zagreb , and continued to be a member of the editorial board of the 1965-founded regime-critical journal “Praxis”. From 1966 to 1968 he was chairman of the Yugoslav Society for Philosophy. In 1973 he became a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Vranicki advocated the thesis of a possible variety of Marxist philosophies and criticized the Stalinist concept of Marxism.

His work History of Marxism (Zagreb 1961) is an important standard work on the theoretical history of Marxism.
