Mary Prema Pierick

Sister Mary Prema Pierick ( religious name , real name Mechthild Pierick ) (born May 13, 1953 in Reken ) is a Catholic nun and the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta .

Life

Mechthild Pierick met Mother Teresa at the Berlin Catholic Day in 1980 . At the age of 27, she joined the religious community of Missionaries of Charity as a postulant in Essen in 1980 and took the religious name Maria Prema. In 1983 she made her temporary profession . Initially, Sr. Prema worked in Rome , Naples and Madrid . During Mother Teresa's stays in the Vatican , she served as a translator. Mother Teresa called her to Calcutta in the mother house of the order; Since 2005 Sr. Prema has been a member of the leadership group of the congregation , which consists of four sisters.

Mother Teresa's first successor as Superior General, Sr. Mary Nirmala Joshi , refrained from a third term for health reasons. Sr. Prema was elected on March 25th, 2009 by the 162 participants of the General Chapter in Calcutta as the second successor of Mother Teresa as Superior General of the Congregation.

Honors

Sr. Prema was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2009.
