Nirmala Joshi

Sister Nirmala Joshi MC (born July 23, 1934 in Ranchi , British India , † June 23, 2015 in Calcutta ) was a Catholic nun and superior general of the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta.

Nirmala Joshi was born the second of eleven children to a Hindu family from Nepal who settled in Bihar , India . Her father served as an officer in the British Army . Although she belonged to the highest Indian caste of Brahmins , she attended a Catholic missionary school in Patna . In 1958, under the influence of the violent partition of India , she finally converted to Catholic Christianity and joined the Order of Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta founded by Mother Teresa . There she was assistant to the founder of the order for many years before she was appointed successor in the congregation and superior of the order in 1997. Under her leadership, new religious homes were built in Panama , Kathmandu and New York . After two terms in office, she waived a third term for health reasons. She was followed on March 24, 2009 by Sister Mary Prema Pierick , a native of Germany from Reken in the Münsterland region.
