Hans Schottmann

Hans Schottmann (born January 1, 1932 in Breslau ) is a German Germanic and Scandinavian medievalist and linguist . He is an emeritus professor for Nordic studies and was director of the institute for Nordic philology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

In Minden / Westphalia, Schottmann passed his Abitur in 1952 and then took up a degree in German studies in Bonn until 1958 (with Werner Betz ), as well as Latin philology and classical archeology. There he became a metaphor and comparison in the language of Friedrich Hölderlin in 1958 with a new Germanist work . PhD. From the summer semester of 1958, he was employed for two years as a lecturer at Uppsala University , which resulted in his scientific focus on Scandinavian studies. After returning in 1960, he took up a position at the LMU Munich as an assistant to Betz at the Nordic Seminar, who had meanwhile been appointed there, was promoted to the Academic Council and in 1970 he received his habilitation there with a thesis The Icelandic Marian Poetry. Investigation of the vernacular Marian poetry of the Middle Ages with the Venia for German and Nordic philology. In the same year he followed the call to the Westphalian Wilhelms University for a full professorship for Nordic and German philology. On March 18, 1971, Schottmann was appointed director of the Nordic seminar. He held the chair and management until his retirement in 1998.
