The President Beaches are a number of beaches in the west of Livingston Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . They extend over a length of 10 km at the western end of the Byers Peninsula .
The geologist Kaye R. Everett, who had carried out soil surveys in this area as part of the United States Antarctic Research Program in February 1969, suggested the designation as West Beaches . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names decided in 1970, however, to transfer the name President's Harbor , made by seal hunters from Stonington in the 1820s, for the adjacent bay, now known as New Plymouth, to the beaches described here for historical reasons.
