The Preussenschanze is a rampart near Bad Homburg in the Hochtaunus district . Due to its proximity to Saalburg Castle and the Limes , it was long considered of Roman origin . Today, however, they are believed to have originated during the coalition wars .

Location and description

The ski jump is approx. 30 m above the pass, which is located directly at the Saalburg approx. 300 m to the northeast. The slope on which the ski jump is located is oriented to the east and falls steeply below the jump.

The hill itself has an unusual, hexagonal shape. In 1936 the wall was determined to be 1.8 m high. Today the height is about 0.5 m. On the northwest side there is a 4.5 m wide gap, which is interpreted as a gate.

Exploration and historical assignment

A three-sided depression was found inside the ski jump in 1892, which was referred to as a water container, to which a canal trench also led. In the canal itself there was a Vespasian and a Trajan denarius . Among other things, these finds led to the assignment to the Roman period.

Today it is believed that the hill originates from the coalition wars, which is also evident in the name. Cohausen suspects that the Saalburg Pass was coated with guns from here. The last excavation took place in 1921, although no finds were made. The Burgstall is now a ground monument .
