Price's Mill (1987)

Price's Mill , also known as Calliham's Mill ( Callaham's Mill ), Stone's Mill, and Park's Mill , is a water-powered flour mill about two miles east of Parksville on South Carolina Highway 33-138 (Price's Mill Road) at Stevens Creek in McCormick County . In the Geographic Names Information System , the mill is listed as the Prices Mill . It was built in the 1890s and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 22, 1972 . At that time, it was one of the few water-powered flour mills still in existence in South Carolina.

history

David Calliham was originally from Virginia and acquired land on Stevens Creek in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina, around 1768. He built a flour mill by the stream. Calliham died before 1784.

In addition to the corn mill, there was a cotton ginning machine and a grain mill nearby, but these were destroyed by floods.

The current mill was built in the 1890s. From 1910 she ran RA Price, who was partly active seven days a week and produced up to 6400 kg of corn flour per week. Price died in 1968. The mill was later taken over by his son; At this point, contract milling was declining and the mill bought corn to grind cornmeal from. John M. Price ran the mill three days a week in the early 1970s, producing around 3,200 kg of white and yellow cornmeal per week, which he sold under the mill's own brand in stores in McCormick County and Greenwood County. Price employed one man.

The mill has been out of operation since at least 2003.

architecture

Power transmission

The mill is a two-storey post construction with a gable roof . It is made of roughly hewn pine wood. The exposed beams measure 30 cm by 30 cm; they are mortised and pegged. The foundation of the building is made of bricks. A steel centrifugal separator can be seen in photographs.

The burr-type millstones have a diameter of 107 cm and are located in a wooden box. The upper millstone has a round hole, the lower millstone has a square opening. The corn was filled through a funnel and emptied into a tub. The top stone could be raised or lowered depending on the desired fineness of the end product.

A stone and mortar dam built in the early 19th century dammed Stevens Creek. It was replaced in 1913 by a 4 m high concrete dam. The power is transmitted from the river via a 15 m long shaft to a wooden wagon wheel under the mill building.
