Primera (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Primera is a white wine variety that was bred by Helmut Becker at the Geisenheim Research Station . For this, the oenologist crossed the grape varieties ( Silvaner x Riesling ) x (Riesling x Silvaner) in 1952 . Primera has had plant variety protection since 1997 . The experiments with this grape variety belong in the same context as the development of other breeds called Ehrenbreitsteiner , Dakapo , Rondo and Saphira . The basic idea of Becker, against the background of his dissertation on phylloxera and the preceding ten years of research into combating it, was the development of a pest and fungus-resistant vine.

In the case of the Primera, Becker's expectations were not fully met: In lower, damp locations or poor years, this vine is susceptible to powdery mildew ( Oidium spp. ) And must be treated with 1–2 sulfur treatments shortly before and / or shortly after flowering become. However, good winter hardiness against severe frosts and resistance to gray mold rot ( Botrytis cinerea ), which only forms on ripe grapes, are advantageous . Primera is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.

The taste of the wine is reminiscent of a Silvaner , but is more neutral. It is a good base wine for sparkling wine .
