Dakapo

Dakapo grape variety

Dakapo is a red wine variety that was bred by Helmut Becker in 1972 at the Geisenheim research institute . It is a cross between opaque red x blue Portuguese . Externally, the grape can hardly be distinguished from the Portuguese vine. But it is more resistant to frost and less demanding in terms of cultivation technology. In 2007 a planted vineyard area of 59 hectares was raised.

The experiments with this grape variety belong in the same context as the development of other breeds called Ehrenbreitsteiner , Prinzipal , Rondo and Saphira . The basic idea of Becker was - against the background of his dissertation on phylloxera and the preceding 10 years of research into combating it - the development of a pest and fungus-resistant vine.

So-called cover wine (Teinturier) is primarily obtained from the Dakapo grape with deep red pulp , which, up to a proportion of 5% red wines from grape varieties with light pulp (mainly Portuguese), is intended to give these otherwise pale wines color. To this small extent, this color enhancing addition does not change the taste of the wine. The Dakapo vine is less often intended as the basis for an independent type of wine; the wine is very strong, substantial and tannic . The name of this new breed is derived from Italian according to its purpose : Dacapo = addition .
