Saphira grape variety

Saphira is a white grape variety that was bred in 1978 by the grapevine grower Helmut Becker at the Institute for Grapevine Breeding of the Geisenheim Research Institute, today Geisenheim University . It is a cross between Arnsburger and Seyve-Villard 1-72 . The variety is characterized by high resistance to fungus Peronospora ( downy mildew ) and an average resistance to powdery mildew ( powdery mildew also Erysiphe necator ) from. It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. When viticulture of economic disadvantage is avoided to have to grow no return delivered, male plants as pollinators.

The type of wine is reminiscent of the White Burgundy , although the acidity of Saphira is on average up to 3 per mille higher.

The vine is grown in Germany (11 hectares, as of 2018, source: Federal Statistical Office), Italy and Switzerland (0.15 hectares, as of 2007). The Saphira grape variety has been classified in all German wine-growing regions for several years. The vines of this variety can be grown in vineyards without special permission. The wine can be marketed as a quality wine. Due to the regularly high must weights (Öchsle grade), the wines often achieve late harvest and selection quality.
